Join us for the inaugural “Intersections: Where Art Meets Storytelling,” a new immersive series by Kern Magazine designed to bring artists, storytellers, photographers, dancers, historians, and the community into one shared creative space.
On June 1, the historic Fairfax Grange dance hall opens its doors for an evening where local history and human story intertwine through live conversation and art. The public is welcome to attend, though RSVP is requested by May 31 to help accommodate seating and space for participating artists.
Beginning at 6:30p.m., Kern Magazine will sit down with Fairfax Grange 570 President John Harrer for an intimate live interview exploring not only the rich history of the iconic dance hall built in 1940, but also the creative spirit behind the man helping preserve its legacy.
A photographer, writer, drone pilot, and lifelong visual storyteller, Harrer’s artistic perspective has been deeply shaped by horsemanship and years spent documenting life from the saddle, the road, and the sky.
Guests will get to know Harrer’s personal journey, and learn about his dedication to preserving local history and why this historic dance floor continues to hold such deep meaning within Kern County culture and community.
As the conversation unfolds, artists throughout the room have the opportunity to create in real time.
Special guest portrait artist JJ Silva and plein air artist Charlotte White will capture the experience through their artistic perspectives.
And because that dance floor was built to move—special guest dancers and co-founders of Bakersfield Country Dance Co, Jesus and Symone, will take the floor for a live dance performance honoring the spirit and history of the hall itself.
Behind the lens, photographers Alie Pert and Crissy Thomasy of Made You Look Studio will document the evening through their own artistic craft, preserving the storytelling, movement, artists in action, and quiet moments unfolding throughout the space.
And last but not least, live music will be provided by The Bakersfield Sound Guard, Ernie Lewis, Rick “Reno” Stevens, Zack Arnold, and Norm Hamlet for an unforgettable night.
The public is invited to bring sketchbooks, easels, or simply themselves. Come create alongside fellow artists or sit back and experience an evening rooted in storytelling, creativity, history, and connection.
This is more than an interview. It’s a living collaboration between art and community.
