As the United States prepares to mark 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, communities across the country are celebrating more than fireworks and flags. They’re honoring the people, families, and hometown stories that continue to shape the nation’s legacy.

Here in Kern County, that story includes Jonathan Cervantes of Wasco, California, a Machinist’s Mate Fireman Apprentice in the U.S. Navy and the son of our Spotlight award partner, Angie of veteran-owned Bee Creationz.

For Cervantes, serving during America’s 250th year of independence carries deep meaning.

“To me it means freedom and not taking it for granted,” Cervantes says. “Being able to serve during America’s 250th year is an amazing honor and something I’ll always be proud of.”

His advice for young people considering military service is simple: take the leap.

“Go all in!” he says. “I was nervous about joining at first, but that’s completely normal. It’s not always easy but it’s worth it. You’ll learn new things, meet some really cool people, and make a lot of memories.”

And while serving has brought new experiences, new people, and plenty of memories, home still has its own kind of magic. When Cervantes returns to Kern County, he already knows what he wants first.

“Definitely my mom’s famous pancakes… with a big side of bacon,” he says. “I can’t wait!”

As America celebrates its semiquincentennial, Cervantes’ story is a reminder that freedom is carried forward by real people, real families, and the hometowns cheering them on.

From all of us at Kern Magazine, we wish our readers a safe and happy Fourth of July as our nation celebrates 250 years of independence. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Jonathan Cervantes and to every man and woman who has served or is currently serving in our nation’s armed forces. Your dedication, sacrifice, and commitment to protecting our freedoms are deeply appreciated—not just on Independence Day, but every day. Happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸
