Even small business owners need a chance to unplug.
This summer, our award partner Angie Lopez of Bee Creationz headed east with her partner in life and business, Chris, whose family roots are on the East Coast. The trip gave them an opportunity to reconnect with family in Pennsylvania, revisit favorite places, and experience a little of the fast-paced energy New York City is known for.
From family gatherings in the Pocono Mountains to slices of New York pizza and a walk through Times Square, the getaway offered a welcome break from the daily hustle of running a small business in Kern County.
We caught up with Angie after the trip to hear about her favorite moments, what she missed most from home and why East Coast humidity proved to be her toughest travel companion.
Q&A with Angie
Where’d you go?
We traveled to Pennsylvania and New York. We spent time in the Poconos with family, enjoyed the scenery, and indulged in Grandma’s famous homemade Puerto Rican food. Then we made our way into New York to visit Times Square and grab some good ol’ New York pizza at Joe’s Pizza!
What did you love most about the trip?
I loved just slowing down, especially in Pennsylvania and the Poconos. It’s so relaxing, with beautiful trees and lakes all around. As small business owners, we’re always working, answering messages, or thinking about the next order, so it was nice to unplug a little, catch up with family, and revisit places we love!
The greenery, mountains, and family gatherings were my favorite part. I also enjoyed spending time in New York. Being from Wasco, I don’t get to experience a big city every day, so I loved the energy of Times Square and taking in all the sights and sounds of the city.”
Anything you missed from Kern County while you were gone, apart from the Kern Magazine Team, naturally?
Besides you, of course! I definitely missed my own bed, my dog Rico, and the dry Kern County heat. The humidity back east had my hair fighting for its life the entire trip!
Anything funny happen that might make us laugh or smile?
The humidity in New York and Pennsylvania absolutely humbled me. I spent time doing my hair only for it to frizz up within minutes of stepping outside. By the end of the trip, I just accepted my fate and embraced the vacation hair.
One sentence to sum up the trip?
A perfect mix of family time, great food, beautiful scenery, and making memories with the people I love.
